Abstract

This study was done for the purpose of examining the quality of neonatal nursing care of three general hospitals in Seoul area.
This study will provide nurses with basic data for improvement of neonatal care, and for development of a neonatal nursing care evaluation tool.
The evaluation research design was used.
Data was collected retrospectively by 123 third year nursing students of a junior nursing college from the 3 general hospitals affiliated to the college.
The students had their clinical neonatal nursing care experience for 2 weeks from one of the three hospitals during the period between March 4 to November 23, 1985. Data collection was done from the 7th to the 10th of January, 1986.
The instrument with 5 points Likert scale was developed by the researcher. It consisted of 35 items of process evaluation, structural evaluation, and observable nursing care carried out by nursing personnel.
Data was analyzed by computer using the Statistical Package for the Social Science Program.
The results of the study were as follows;
1. Basic data for those three hospitals under the study was as such: average monthly number of neonates were 60 for A hospital, 95 for B hospital, and 31 for C hospital.
Number of nursing personnel were 7 registered nurses and 3 nurses aids for A hospital, 6 registered nurses and 2 nurses aids for B hospital, and 5 sequestered nurses and 4 nurses aids for C hospital at the time of investigation on December, 1985.
2. The items with high mean scores of nursing care quality were bathing4.862, aseptic handling of instruments needed for formulary preparation 4.748, burping babies after feeding 4.561, and assessment of babies weight 4,520.
However, the three items concerning breast feeding, and an items concerning with checking contamination of neonatal room showed the mean scores of below 3 points indicating the necessity of improvement of nursing care.
The remaining 27 items showed mean scores ranging from 3.106 to 3,976.
The differences of quality nursing care between the three hospitals were statistically significant showing the total mean score of 4.037 for B hospital, 3.862 for C hospital, and 3.344 for A hospital (F=73.517, P=.0000).
